Mysuru: A 21-year-old Rakshitha, the captive-born lioness in Mysuru Zoo, died of illness early on Saturday. She was the longest-living feline in captivity in the 133-year history of Mysuru zoo.Mysuru zoo announced her death with deep sorrow. She was a 21-year and 4-month-old lioness and died of age-related illness around 7am on Aug 9.Rakshitha, the lioness, was born to Narasimha, an Asiatic lion, and Manini, an African lioness, on April 1, 2004, at Mysuru zoo. She was one of the attractions at the facility established by the then Maharaja of Mysuru. The lioness was under treatment for a week for age-related illness.Zoo executive director said Rakshitha’s passing is a profound loss to Mysuru Zoo. The zoo administration, veterinary team, and animal caretakers deeply mourn her loss and appreciate the support from the global veterinary community and wildlife conservationists during her treatment.An officer said Rakshitha remained active till her last breath and entertained lakhs of visitors. Due to restrictions from international organisations, she wasn’t used for breeding, given that she was a hybrid lioness.
