MANGALURU: Residents of Kodialbail ward raised serious concerns over contamination of drinking water and sought immediate intervention from the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC).Locals alleged that sewage water from the wet well in Kodialguthu was being let into public drains, leading to contamination of nearby wells and causing a foul odour in the area. Residents said the issue posed health risks and persisted for some time. They said the problem arose due to old and damaged pipelines, resulting in sewage being released into drains.Former corporator Prakash B Salian said that the sewage from the wet well should be directed to the Kudroli wet well, but due to old pipes, it was released into public drains, causing foul odours and health hazards. Complaints were made about the breeding of mosquitoes and the contamination of well water. However, no action was taken by the MCC yet to solve the serious issue of health hazards, he said.Upon learning about sewage water flowing into drains from the wet well, MLC Ivan D’Souza visited the site and discussed the issue with local residents on Monday. D’Souza said that sewage from the wet well was discharged into drains, contaminating local wells. “This posed health risks to residents if they used the contaminated water. I visited the area at the request of former corporator Prakash B Salian. I listened to the residents’ concerns about water contamination, and instructed officials to address the issue immediately,” the MLC said.Discussing the issue with the officials, D’Souza directed them to resolve the issue promptly. “Officials assured immediate action and promised to redirect the sewage through pipes. A proposal for 3 pipes costing Rs 5 crore was submitted, and the engineer confirmed that the work would commence soon,” he added.EOM/ January 6, 2026
