Karnataka accident: Drunk driver hits scooter, rider injured; repeat offender booked

MANGALURU: A car driver from Kodippady, Puttur, who allegedly drove under the influence of alcohol, has been booked for reckless driving after an accident on the Mani–Mysuru National Highway.According to police, on the evening of 11 November, Mohammad Toufiq, 29, a car driver and resident of Kodippady, Puttur, was driving on the Mani–Mysuru National Highway from Kabaka towards Puttur. When he reached Pollya in Kabaka village, he allegedly drove recklessly and collided from behind with a scooter ridden by Shashikumar, who was travelling ahead of him.As a result of the accident, Shashikumar fell onto the road, sustained injuries, and was admitted to hospital for treatment. A case was registered at the Puttur Traffic Police Station under Sections 281 and 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).A medical examination confirmed that Toufiq was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. Police also noted that earlier this year, he had been involved in another accident caused by reckless driving, which had resulted in a fatality.In view of these findings, Section 110 of the BNS was additionally invoked in the case. The accused was subsequently produced before the court.
