Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) recently celebrated Kannada Rajyotsava with great enthusiasm, showcasing the rich cultural heritage and pride associated with the Kannada language.However, amid these grand celebrations, a significant issue remains unaddressed—the implementation of Kannada display boards on commercial establishments. Despite the annual festivities that highlight the importance of the Kannada language, many commercial complexes continue to prioritise English on their display boards, with Kannada noticeably absent.In previous years, HDMC, under pressure from Kannada organisations, initiated drives to enforce the use of Kannada on display boards. Notices were issued to establishments, urging them to comply with the directive. While some businesses adhered to the guidelines, many others failed to implement the changes. This lack of compliance can be attributed to the negligence of HDMC officials, who did not take stringent actions to ensure the enforcement of Kannada display boards as a priority.The reluctance to fully embrace Kannada in commercial signage not only undermines the cultural significance of the language but also contradicts the spirit of Kannada Rajyotsava. The festival is a celebration of the formation of the state of Karnataka and the recognition of Kannada as its official language. Therefore, the absence of Kannada in public and commercial spaces is a disservice to the language and its speakers.Many Kannada activists said that to address this issue, HDMC must take decisive steps to enforce the use of Kannada on display boards. This could include regular inspections and penalties for non-compliance. Additionally, raising awareness about the importance of the Kannada language and its role in preserving cultural identity could encourage more establishments to comply voluntarily.Amrut Ijare, president, North Karnataka unit of Namma Karnataka Sene, said that while Kannada Rajyotsava is celebrated with much enthusiasm, the true essence of the festival can only be realised when the Kannada language is given its due prominence in all aspects of public life, including commercial signage. It is imperative for HDMC to take proactive measures to ensure that Kannada is not just celebrated once a year but is an integral part of everyday life in Hubballi-Dharwad.Rudresh Ghali, commissioner, HDMC, said that a meeting will be convened to launch a special drive to implement Kannada display boards. Directions will be issued to all zonal officials to consider the issue seriously and implement the Kannada display boards strictly.
