Govt school building on verge of collapse ahead of 125th anniversary

Madikeri: A govt school in the rural part of Kodagu, which is going to celebrate its 125th anniversary, is on the verge of collapse. The walls of the Badagarakeri Govt Higher Primary School in Ponnampet taluk have been facing the threat of collapse.Established in 1900, the Badagarakeri Govt School has been preparing to celebrate its 125th anniversary this year. However, a crack developed in a portion of the school building and collapsed, posing a danger to the entire school building.Following this, a section of the students was shifted out of the damaged classroom, even as the management faced a shortage of classrooms due to the deteriorating infrastructure. A total of 73 students are studying in Badagarakeri Higher Primary School from classes 1 to 7.The management planned to observe the school’s 125th anniversary on Jan 26.The alumni and the school management, who were busy preparing for the anniversary celebrations, are now involved in devising plans for the renovation of the building. A request was submitted to the education department and the gram panchayat by the school development and management committee (SDMC), urging the authorities to carry out immediate relief work on the school building.Meanwhile, the field education officer and concerned engineers visited the school for an inspection, and further steps are awaited.
