GBA In, BBMP Out: Karnataka govt appoints 34 officials to revamp administration

Bengaluru: Marking a pivotal shift in Bengaluru’s administrative framework, the civic governance entered a new chapter with the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) kicking in from Tuesday, replacing the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Revamping the city’s administration, the state govt appointed 34 bureaucrats comprising 15 IAS and 19 KAS officials to various administrative roles of the newly constituted GBA, ranging from the post of the chief commissioner to joint commissioners for the newly carved five corporations of Bengaluru. The appointments mark a decisive shift in how the country’s tech capital will henceforth be managed, as the GBA promises a focused and streamlined approach to Bengaluru’s growing urban challenges. While the state govt has retained most of the incumbent special and zonal commissioners within the GBA, including chief commissioner M Maheshwar Rao, as many as 10 IAS officers were appointed afresh to infuse fresh perspective and effective redressal of the plaguing issues of Bengaluru.Of the 10 IAS officers, five bureaucrats of the secretary rank were appointed as commissioners of each of the five newly carved corporations. They will be assisted by five other additional commissioners (development) belonging to the rank of junior IAS officers. Managing the daily administration of each of the corporations, revenue collection, redressal of citizens’ grievances, and ground-delivery of services, 19 KAS officers were posted as joint commissioners and assistant commissioners in all five corporations.Besides these administrative roles, the govt also appointed two IPS officers, including an officer of the additional director general of police (ADG), assisted by a superintendent rank officer, to head the Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF) within the GBA.
