Madikeri: Tensions are running high in Negalle Karkalli village as the forest dept’s move to claim land under Section 4 of the Karnataka Forest Act, 1963, has triggered unrest among farmers. The department has issued a notice for the joint survey of the land in question — 30 hectares previously classified as Paisari govt land and later converted into C & D land — which has been under cultivation by farmers for decades.Farmers in Shanthalli hobli of Somwarpet taluk, who have long been growing coffee, cardamom, and paddy on this land, say they have been applying for official documentation and lease schemes under the existing govt orders. However, the dept’s recent notice and plan to classify the land as reserved forest has disrupted their livelihoods.A joint survey has been scheduled for Sept 10 to demarcate land boundaries, which the farmers have opposed. The Taluk Raitha Horata Samiti organised protests and bandhs to oppose the move, and petitions were submitted to higher authorities, including the chief minister and relevant ministers. Despite these efforts, the forest department has not withdrawn its plans, leaving farmers increasingly anxious about their future. Taluk Raitha Horata Samiti president Chakravarthi Suresh told TOI that though the govt had initially ordered a joint survey by both the forest and revenue departments, the forest officials are attempting to conduct the survey unilaterally. “If such things happen, they will prepare a report to grab the farmers’ land. Nearly 30,000 acres of C & D land in Kodagu may be grabbed by the department,” he added. Nearly one lakh farmers are relying on these lands, not only for cultivation but also for their homes. The committee has urged for a joint survey. “If the govt forcibly takes these lands, we will stage an agitation for a month in front of the DC office and forest dept office, as it is about survival of poor farmers and their families, and their livelihoods,” he opined.
