Fire breaks out at scrap shops on Mysuru outskirts

Mysuru: A fire broke out at four scrap shops on the outskirts of the city early Monday morning, prompting a swift response from the fire department.Officials said no casualties were reported, and there were no residential structures nearby. The shops, located off Old Kesare Road near the Bengaluru-Mysuru National Highway, had stored used materials like plastic items, foam, and wooden waste both inside and outside. Vehicular movement in the area was disrupted for a while as thick smoke billowed from the burning scrap.

District fire officer K C Ramesh told TOI that the fire call was received around 4.30am, following which firefighting teams were immediately dispatched to the spot.Three fire tenders — including two bowser vehicles — and 25 personnel were pressed into service to control the blaze. Firefighters worked continuously, using water from the bowser tenders to tackle the burning scrap material.Even after the main flames were extinguished, crews continued operations by scattering and turning over the waste to eliminate hidden embers. Fire officials said this step was crucial as scrap heaps can retain heat and reignite if not cooled thoroughly. The firefighting operation lasted nearly five hours, with teams remaining on-site to complete the cooling process and ensure there were no flare-ups.A police officer said the cause of the fire was not immediately known. Further assessment will be carried out once the area is declared safe.
