Financial grant for simple weddings among minorities: Sait

Mysuru: Former minister and Congress MLA Tanveer Sait on Wednesday announced that couples from economically backward minority communities opting for simple weddings will receive a financial grant of Rs 50,000.During a meeting on the Simple Marriage Incentive Scheme held at the deputy commissioner’s office, Sait, who is also KPCC working president, stated that Mysuru district has been allocated a target of 150 beneficiaries. He stressed the importance of identifying eligible couples promptly. He also issued strict directives to officials to ensure that no child marriages take place under any circumstance.Highlighting the responsibility of district and taluk-level minority welfare department officials, he urged them to work proactively to identify beneficiaries. He added that the scheme would be especially meaningful if it prioritised support for brides who lost one or both parents.Sait further recommended that the target should encompass all minority communities—Muslim, Christian, Jain, Buddhist, Sikh, and Parsi. Officials were instructed to thoroughly verify the age documents of applicants, conduct home visits, and ensure that neither the bride nor groom has a living spouse before granting benefits.Deputy commissioner Lakshmikanth Reddy G emphasised the need to verify age using SSLC marks cards or birth certificates and suggested coordinating with the registrar’s office to ensure that marriage registration occurs at the time of the ceremony.Mysuru City Corporation commissioner Shaikh Tanveer Asif, district minority welfare department officer Shilpa, and assistant director of the department of information and public relations SH Nirmala were present.
