DGP Alok Kumar conducts inspection of Kalaburagi Central Prison

Kalaburagi: A video showing inmates playing cards, consuming alcohol, and smoking cigarettes inside Kalaburagi Central Prison has gone viral on social media, triggering serious concerns over prison security. Based on a complaint filed by jail superintendent Anita on Friday, police have registered a case against four prisoners — Prajwal, Akash, Rakesh, and Anand — who were allegedly involved in the incident. In the wake of the controversy, director general of police (prisons and correctional services) Alok Kumar made a surprise visit to Kalaburagi Central Prison on Saturday and carried out a thorough inspection. During his visit to the central prison on the outskirts of the city, the DGP inspected each barrack and reviewed how prohibited items were being supplied to inmates and how prisoners were able to lead what appeared to be a luxurious lifestyle within the jail premises. The incident has caused a stir within the state prison department and attracted widespread public criticism regarding lapses in jail security. Taking the matter seriously, DGP Alok Kumar personally assessed the situation, questioned jail officials, staff, and inmates, and assured that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible.Additional inspector general of prisons PV Ananda Reddy, north zone DIG P Sesha, city police commissioner Sharanappa SD, and jail superintendent Anita, along with other senior officials, were present during the inspection. Sources indicated that stringent action is likely if mobile phones, narcotics, or other prohibited items are found inside the jail.
