Crop loss drives ryot to suicide

Kalaburagi: A farmer from Basavapatpana village in Kalaburagi taluk died by suicide by jumping into the backwaters of Bhima River on Saturday. Mareppa Sayabanna Barma, 42, was distressed after witnessing his cotton crop inundated by floodwaters. Barma had taken a loan of Rs 2 lakh from Bank of Baroda for cultivation on 2acres of land in Faratabad. He had also borrowed Rs 10 lakh from another source to finance his farming activities. Police said Barma was unable to repay his loans due to crop failure. This was not the first instance of crop damage in the area due to the overflowing Bhima River. A case has been registered at Farhatabad police station in connection with the incident.
