Mandya: The Union govt sanctioned Rs 14 crore under the Khelo India scheme for the construction of a multipurpose indoor sports facility in Mandya district. The sanction followed the efforts of Union minister HD Kumaraswamy, who represented Mandya Lok Sabha. The facility was proposed on one acre earmarked at the University of Agricultural Sciences’ VC Farm premises. Officials initially explored developing the sports complex within Mandya city limits to ensure easy access for youth and sportspersons, but land constraints posed a major challenge.
The multipurpose indoor stadium was envisioned as a sports hub for indoor games, including volleyball, badminton, basketball and table tennis, along with other disciplines suitable for all-weather play. The project aimed to nurture budding sportspersons and encourage active lifestyles among students, youth and general public.Once completed, the facility was expected to strengthen the district’s sports ecosystem. “The proposed stadium aims to benefit local athletes, sports teams, and the community at large by promoting physical activity, encouraging sports development, and fostering social interaction,” said Kumaraswamy. He further emphasised that the facility would serve as a major addition to the district’s sports infrastructure and had the potential to host national and international sporting events, boosting tourism and the local economy.
