Brother refuses to accept body for funeral; social worker performs last rites in Udupi

UDUPI: In an incident reported at Kaup police station limits, a man’s brother refused to accept the body for the funeral. Consequently, social worker Vishu Shetty took responsibility and performed the last rites at the Beedinagudde Rudra Bhumi on Monday.Social worker Vishu Shetty stated that the deceased, aged around 70 years, was living in an ashram. Following his death, a case was registered at the Kaup police station. The police reportedly reached out to the deceased’s brother and carried out the legal formalities, but in the end, the brother declined to take custody of the body for the funeral. Efforts to convince him also failed, he said.Finally, after conducting the post-mortem at the district hospital, Shetty received the body and carried out the burial as per the deceased’s religious customs. Social activists Hussain, Ramadas Palan Udyavar, and Shiva of Udyavar’s Kanasina Mane extended their support in the process. Ambalpadi Krishna also assisted by providing a JCB.Shetty said that upon learning the victim’s faith, they decided to perform a burial. Reflecting on the incident, he noted that cases like this raise troubling questions about whether brotherhood and familial bonds are turning into nothing but an illusion. There has been an increase in such cases, he said.
