Bengaluru hospitals to serve special nutritious meals to patients

Bengaluru: For the first time, govt hospitals in Karnataka will serve patients meals designed not just to fill their stomachs, but to help them heal fast. Until now, all patients — from children to pregnant women — were provided with the same food, often falling short of their nutritional needs. The health and family welfare department, in collaboration with Iskcon, will be providing tailor-made meals for patients at govt hospitals. A pregnant woman, for example, will be given iron- and folic acid-rich meals to support her health, while new mothers will get food that aids recovery and boosts milk production. Children, too, will receive nutrient-rich diets enhancing their growth besides building immunity. A total of five categories of meals— general, therapeutic, pregnancy, postnatal, and paediatric — will be served to patients. The programme, according to an official release from the department, will first cover three major Bengaluru hospitals — CV Raman, Jayanagar, and KC General — reaching about 250 patients in each. The health department has earmarked almost Rs 1.4 crore for nine months.
