BCC employees seek general body meeting of employees’ union

Belagavi: Discontent within the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) Employees’ Union came to the fore, with a group of employees submitting a memorandum to corporation commissioner Kartik M on Monday, demanding immediate convening of a general body meeting of the union.Although 17 members were elected unopposed to the employees’ union last week, 7 individuals, including 2 elected members and other staff, raised serious concerns about the functioning of the BCC employees welfare association. In the memorandum, they accused the present leadership of failing to safeguard the rights, welfare and interests of corporation employees. The signatories pointed out that no general meeting of the employees’ association was held in the past 10 years, leaving employees without a proper forum to raise grievances. They alleged that several long-pending issues affecting staff remained unresolved and that repeated complaints and demands expressed by employees had gone unaddressed. This, they said, led to frustration and mental stress among many workers.Stressing the need to revitalise the organisation, the employees demanded that a general meeting be convened at the earliest to discuss pressing issues and elect new office-bearers. They urged the commissioner to intervene and grant immediate permission for the meeting. The memorandum, signed by 53 employees including Yallesh Bachalpuri and Shrikant Irle, further alleged that the Union failed to stand up for employees even during key administrative developments and controversies involving former commissioners. It also criticised the association for not organising farewell functions for retiring officers and staff, claiming that the Union now existed only in name. The employees called for swift action to restore the credibility and effectiveness of the Union and ensure that the voices of municipal staff are heard.
