Madikeri: The Amar Jawan Memorial in Hudikeri is a significant addition to the military heritage of Kodagu, a district renowned for its deep-rooted connection with the Indian Armed Forces.Scheduled to be unveiled on Oct 27, this memorial stands as a testament to the patriotism and dedication of the region’s former soldiers. Kodagu, often referred to as the “soldiers’ district,” has a rich history of contributing to the nation’s defence. The Hudikeri Ex-Servicemen’s Association, established four months ago, has been instrumental in completing this project. Comprising around 100 ex-servicemen from the Army, Navy, and Air Force, the association has taken the initiative to build this memorial on land provided by the Hudikeri gram panchayat. The memorial, costing between Rs 10 to 12 lakh, features a five-foot-high pillar adorned with a rifle and helmet, symbolising the sacrifices of the armed forces. A bronze logo representing the Army, Navy, and Air Force, sourced from Delhi, adds to its allure. The memorial’s inauguration coincides with the Indian Army’s Infantry Day and the Cauvery Sankramana, a significant day in Kodagu. The event will see participation from people’s representatives, ex-soldiers, and officials, highlighting the community’s respect and admiration for its military heritage. In addition to the memorial, a hall has been constructed in memory of Kechamada Tilak, a soldier from Hudikeri who was martyred in an avalanche. This hall will house portraits and information about notable military figures from Kodagu, like FM Cariappa and General Thimayya.President of Hudikeri Ex-Servicemen’s Association Balyamiderira Prakash said the project is supported by a dedicated team. The association plans to continue its efforts in supporting former soldiers and their families, he stated. The association aims to address the needs of ex-servicemen in the region and pay homage to them in times of need, ensuring that their contributions to the nation are never forgotten.
