Cybercriminals take current a/c route to con loan-seeking woman

Mysuru: A classic example of how current bank accounts of people are misused by cyber criminals has come to light. In this case, a woman from Kerala has fallen victim to cybercriminals, who used her bank account to transfer money of victims of cyberfrauds.The mother of a toddler, who runs a photocopying shop for a living, fell victim to cybercriminals while sourcing loan online. According to police, the fraudsters contacted her with assurances of arranging a loan and convinced her to share personal details. They subsequently opened a current bank account in her name and gained control of her cellphone by installing an application. They allegedly used the account to carry out multiple cybercrimes, including three of those registered in Mysuru city. The woman got to know of the misuse only after Mysuru City police contacted her during investigation. “The woman was searching for a loan. She was unaware of the modus operandi of the cybercriminals. She unwittingly shared all details, and installed an app suggested by the criminals,” police sources said.“In the eyes of the law, she is considered an accused. People should be careful about taking help from unknown persons to open current bank accounts. As her cellphone was controlled remotely by the accused, she was not even aware of the misuse of her account,” they added.Police have, time and again, warned the public against falling into the trap of cybercriminals who use the documents of people looking for money to open mule accounts.
