Bengaluru: Karnataka has decided to introduce 15% non-resident Indian quota in govt medical colleges, said minister for medical education Sharanprakash R Patil.National Medical Commission (NMC) has sanctioned 450 additional medical seats for the state for academic year 2025–26, as reported by TOI earlier. Speaking to mediapersons at Vikas Soudha Saturday, the minister said among the newly sanctioned 400 seats, 15% have been earmarked for NRI quota with a fixed fee of Rs 25 lakh per seat. “This will help govt medical colleges become more self-reliant financially rather than depending heavily on state grants,” he said. The additional seats have been allotted to medical colleges in Bengaluru, Mysuru, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Raichur and Vijayanagar, with each receiving 50 seats. After NEET results, 9,263 seats were offered in the first round of allotment. With the newly sanctioned seats, Karnataka now has 9,663 medical seats in total, he said.“The number of students aspiring for medical education is rising every year. Many meritorious students are unable to afford high fees in private colleges. Hence, we appealed for more seats, and I’m glad our request has been approved,” the minister said.
