Woman leaves newborn in Bengaluru hospital, jumps into lake

Bengaluru: A 22-year-old woman, who was allegedly experiencing post-partum depression after giving birth to a boy, walked over 2km from Vani Vilas Hospital to Lalbagh Botanical Garden early Saturday morning and ended her life by jumping into a lake there.The deceased is N Jenisha Nath, a resident of Sarjapur and originally from Nepal. The incident came to light around 7am when security personnel noticed her body in the lake and alerted police. Initially, the victim remained unidentified and her body was shifted to the mortuary of Victoria Hospital. However, by afternoon, Nabaraj, a security guard, visited VV Puram police station, saying his wife Jenisha, who was a patient in Vani Vilas Hospital, went missing, leaving behind her newborn boy.By then, jurisdictional cops from Siddapura station had alerted the city police control room about finding the unidentified woman’s body in the lake. Soon, Nabaraj was taken to Victoria Hospital mortuary and he identified Jenisha.“According to Nabaraj, his wife gave birth to the boy on Aug 17. But for some reason, the infant was rapidly losing weight and doctors were concerned about it. Depressed, she left Vani Vilas Hospital at 4am and walked to Lalbagh. The gates were open for morning walkers and she went to the lake and jumped,” a police officer said.
