Udupi: Udupi district has ordered a departmental inquiry into allegations levelled by an affected woman against police personnel.According to the police, on Dec 9, in connection with a punishment awarded in a road accident case that occurred in 2014, the court passed an order directing the accused, Ashiq, to deposit Rs 20 lakh along with interest before the court. As the accused failed to appear before the court, and did not deposit the amount, the court issued an order directing Malpe police station to arrest the accused and produce him before the PCJ & CJM court, Udupi, on or before Wednesday.In compliance with the court’s directive, and for the execution of the warrant, personnel from Malpe police station proceeded to the accused’s residence in Brahmavar. During this process, two women residing in the house allegedly obstructed the police from discharging their official duties, following which a case was registered at Brahmavar police station.In connection with this incident, over the past two days, organisations of the Billava community, elected representatives, women’s organisation leaders, and political party leaders have expressed various doubts and concerns regarding the incident.In view of these developments, it has been decided to temporarily halt the present investigation, transfer the case from Brahmavar police station, and entrust it to a suitable investigating officer. Further, allegations made by the affected women against police personnel will be probed by senior department officers, and if any lapses are found, disciplinary action will be initiated against those responsible, SP Hariram Shankar said.This decision has been taken in the interest of ensuring justice in connection with the incident. The SP urged the public, that there is no need for any confusion or suspicion regarding the matter.Earlier during the day, MLA Yashpal Suvarna urged the SP to look into the case seriously, and take appropriate action.
