Pic: SCRUTINY: Labour and Dharwad district minister Santosh Lad inspects areas with damaged crops in Manakwad village Hubballi: Labour and district minister Santosh Lad said that approximately one lakh hectares of crops were damaged due to the continuous heavy rain in Dharwad district.Speaking to reporters after inspecting the areas of damaged crops due to the continuous rainfall in Manakawad village of Annigeri and Kundgol taluk on Saturday, Lad said that 80,000 hectares of green gram, 6,500 hectares of urad, 7,500 hectares of soybean, 50 hectares of maize, 565 hectares of chilli, and 425 hectares of onion, around 97,000 to 1 lakh hectares, were damaged.“The district administration, agriculture department, and horticulture department are investigating and conducting a proper survey. We will submit a request to the govt and immediately appeal to the chief minister for the farmers’ compensation,” he said.Lad said that 148 houses were partially damaged due to continuous rain in the district, and the govt will provide Rs 1.2 lakh compensation to the damaged houses. In the past, crops used to get a specific price. He said that the issue of falling prices of crops in the respective districts due to rain will be brought to the attention of the ministers and the govt. The govt will also be urged to start a procurement centre to benefit the farmers.Santosh Lad also visited the houses of Shivappa Basappa Kaujageri and Ningamma Karadi, which were damaged by the rain. He also gave them Rs 25,000 each from the Santosh Lad Foundation.MLAs NH Konaraddi and MR Patil, deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu, and others were present.
