Man falls prey to cyberscam, ends life

Udupi: A 19-year-old rubber tapper died by suicide after allegedly losing Rs 7,000 in a cyberscam. The deceased is Sujek Ram. In a complaint, Manuram, 30, a resident of Jharkhand, stated that his younger brother, Sujek Ram, was working for some time as a rubber tapper in a plantation in Karkala.On Aug 15, at around 2pm, he allegedly consumed some pesticide in his room and fell ill. He was first taken to Karkala Govt Hospital, then to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru and later admitted to a private hospital. However, despite medical care, he died on Sept 7.Preliminary investigation revealed that on Aug 15, he lost Rs 7,000 in response to a fraudulent mobile message, which led him to distress and prompted him to consume poison. Ajekar police have registered a case. Investigation is on.
