Mandya: Principal district and sessions judge and chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, JN Subrahmanya, on Wednesday called upon citizens to uphold the ideals of the Indian Constitution every single day, rather than confining their respect for its principles to Constitution Day alone.He was speaking at the Constitution Day programme held at the Govt Women’s College in Mandya, organised jointly by the department of political science and public administration, the District Legal Services Authority, and the Parisara Rural Development Society.Inaugurating the event by offering floral tributes to BR Ambedkar, Subrahmanya said he realised the Constitution’s profound relevance in shaping everyday life during his student days. He emphasised that every citizen must understand the Constitution, noting that four members from Karnataka served on the Constitution Drafting Committee.Stressing equality before the law, he said that the Constitution not only guarantees fundamental rights but also expects citizens to abide by their fundamental duties.Advising students to reduce time spent on social media, he encouraged them to use their mobile phones to study constitutional rights and responsibilities. He urged teachers to identify students’ interests and help deepen their knowledge. He also expressed his willingness to conduct special lectures on constitutional topics.Senior civil judge M Ananda urged citizens to read the preamble daily, calling it the soul of the Constitution. He said a dignified life is possible only when constitutional ideals are upheld.Advocates’ Association president TS Satyananda noted that the unity seen during national festivals is a result of the Constitution. Inaugurating the programme, MLC CN Manjegowda said that without the framing of the Constitution, the very idea of a dignified life for citizens would not have been possible.“Had the Constitution not been drafted, many of us would not have had the opportunity to live with rights and equality.
