Bengaluru: Govt Railway Police (GRP) Bengaluru division called for more security measures, such as CCTV cameras, at railway stations after a passenger was sedated and robbed at SMVT station this month.The 21-year-old passenger’s jewellery and cash worth Rs 35,000 were stolen on a train while he was unconscious. Police tracked down the robbers on Jan 7, five days after the incident, primarily due to CCTV evidence. According to GRP, two suspicious individuals were found loitering at SMVT station near Sanghamitra Express train. “The complainant recognised them from CCTV footage at the station, leading to suspicion of their involvement in the case. They were brought to the station for interrogation, where they confessed. They were arrested, and Rs 2,600 cash, gold locket with a Hanuman idol, 18-gram gold chain, 8-gram gold ring, 2 Vivo mobile phones and 23 tablets used to sedate passengers were seized,” GRP said.“To enhance security at stations, we asked the railways, including the board, to enhance security by installing more CCTV cameras at stations,” said Sara Fatima, GRP superintendent of police, Bengaluru division.SMVT terminus, which primarily caters long-distance trains, was among those stations where several cases of robbery were reported. Four million passengers use the station every year, according to South Western Railway (SWR). Similar incidents were reported at other railway stations as well.“Passengers shouldn’t consume food or beverages offered by strangers and be extra careful with their belongings,” Fathima said.
