Bengaluru: India is home to 1.9 million developers building on GitHub, making it the second-largest developer community in the world after the United States. According to the Octoverse 2025 report, GitHub projects that by 2030, India will have over 57.5 million developers, surpassing all other countries. This year alone, more than 36 million new developers joined GitHub—roughly one every second—bringing the global total to over 180 million. India added over 5.2 million developers in 2025, accounting for more than 14% of GitHub’s total new users and emerging as the single largest source of new developers worldwide. The surge highlights a broader geographic shift in software development, with significant growth also coming from Brazil and Indonesia.GitHub crossed 100 million developers in 2023, doubling from 50 million in less than three years. Over the past five years, its global developer map was redrawn faster than at any other time, shifting the centre of the software boom toward emerging markets. This year, India added more developers than any other country, outpacing even the United States in growth. The report projects that India will expand its lead to 57.5 million developers by 2030, representing one in three of all global sign-ups. The United States is expected to follow with over 40 million developers, while Brazil (19.6 million), Japan (11.7 million), and the United Kingdom (11 million) complete the top five. Emerging ecosystems across Africa and the Middle East—notably Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, and Morocco—are also gaining momentum, expected to add millions of new developers in the coming years. Open-source activity reached record levels this year, with 1.12 billion contributions across public repositories, up 13% year-on-year.March marked the highest-ever single month for new open-source contributors, with 255,000 first-timers joining the platform. GitHub now hosts 395 million public repositories, generating 1.12 billion contributions and 518.7 million merged pull requests—all all-time highs. Six of the ten fastest-growing repositories were AI infrastructure projects, reflecting soaring demand for runtimes, orchestration, and efficiency tools, while open standards also saw strong adoption. The United States remains the largest source of contributions (12.8 million, 31.8%), followed by India (5 million, 12.5%), which now leads in distinct repositories (405K vs. 342K). A second tier—Germany, Japan, the UK, Korea, Canada, Brazil, Spain, and France—collectively contributes around 40%, underscoring how open-source development has become truly global.Generative AI is now a core part of software development. More than 1.1 million public repositories on GitHub use an LLM SDK (software development kit), with 693,867 created in the past year alone—a 178% year-on-year increase (Aug 2025 vs. Aug 2024). TypeScript has become the most-used programming language on GitHub, overtaking both Python and JavaScript. The shift reflects developers’ growing preference for typed languages that make agent-assisted coding more reliable in production, especially as nearly every major frontend framework now scaffolds with TypeScript by default.
