Convict escapes from Kidwai hospital in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: A convicted prisoner who was admitted to Kidwai hospital for oral cancer treatment escaped Monday. CCTV cameras installed in the hospital showed the prisoner, Chaitanya Kalyani, 34, from Vijayapura district, fleeing the premises, police said.Chaitanya was convicted in a theft case for three years and lodged at Vijayapura jail. He was shifted to Bengaluru Central Prison on Aug 3 after doctors confirmed he was suffering from oral cancer. Based on doctors’ suggestion, he was admitted to Kidwai hospital on Aug 21. The prison staff used to guard him as per their shift timings.Raghu YR, warder of Central Prison, said he was guarding Chaitanya on the third floor of the hospital when the latter managed to escape between 1 and 1.15pm. Chaitanya has a tattoo of a heart on his right hand. Since he is suffering from oral cancer, he cannot speak, a police officer said.Prison authorities initiated a departmental inquiry against the staff to determine how the prisoner could escape from their custody.
