BENGALURU: A 25-year-old newlywed commerce lecturer from Doddaballapur allegedly ended life by jumping into a dam over domestic violence and dowry harassment.The deceased is V Pushpavati, a resident of Tapasihalli. Married 11 months ago to G Venu, a private company employee, Pushpavati worked with a private college in Rajanakunte, police said. On Monday, her body was found floating by passersby who alerted police. Earlier on Sunday, her family had filed a missing-person complaint.Before jumping into Vishwesharaiah checkdam near her house Sunday, Pushpavati reportedly recorded a video message detailing the harassment she faced. A handwritten note was also recovered, in which she expressed her anguish: “Bury my body inside my husband’s house; it should be a lesson to those harassing women for dowry.”In the video, Pushpavati blamed Venu, his parents Govindappa and Bharati, among others. “My life has been filled with pain and distress since my marriage. From the beginning, my husband’s family demanded dowry. My husband frequently stayed away from me, and when I expressed my desire to have children, he postponed it indefinitely. When I gently urged him to undergo medical tests, he reacted with anger and shouted at me. My in-laws were verbally abusive and, at times, physically violent. I felt isolated, humiliated, and trapped in a situation where my dignity and well-being were constantly undermined,” she stated.A case has been registered at Doddaballapur Women police station. Based on her father’s complaint, police have detained Venu and his father for questioning.
