The Kansas City Chiefs did not wait around and hope Patrick Mahomes’ knee heals on their timeline. They made the obvious win-now move instead.According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs are finalizing a trade for Justin Fields, with the New York Jets set to receive a 2027 sixth-round pick. The deal is pending a physical. ESPN also reported that the Jets will pay $7 million of Fields’ $10 million guaranteed salary for 2026, leaving Kansas City responsible for only $3 million.That matters because Mahomes is rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered in December 2025, and Kansas City just lost backup Gardner Minshew to the Arizona Cardinals. For a team still built around Mahomes and Travis Kelce, this is not some luxury add. This is roster insurance with actual urgency attached to it.

The Chiefs needed a quarterback they could trust to handle camp reps and possibly early-season snaps if Mahomes is not ready for Week 1. Fields gives them that much more than a cheap flier ever could.He is coming off a bad season with the Jets, but Kansas City is not trading for him to be a franchise savior. That is the point. The Chiefs are buying a fallback plan, not a headline star. Fields started nine games for New York in 2025 and finished with 1,259 passing yards, seven touchdowns, one interception and 383 rushing yards. The Jets went 2-7 in his starts, but he still brings starting experience and mobility to a Chiefs room that suddenly had neither behind Mahomes.This also protects the rest of the offense. Kelce is back on a one-year deal, and Kansas City cannot afford to waste part of that season because it walked into camp without a credible QB2. The Chiefs paid a late pick and only $3 million in salary for that protection. That is smart business.
The Jets did not just move Justin Fields, they paid to clean up the mistake
This is the uglier side of the trade, and it belongs to New York. The Jets signed Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract last offseason. One year later, they are sending him away, paying most of his guaranteed money, and taking back only a 2027 sixth-round pick. That is not a football flex. That is a reset.Fields never locked down the job. ESPN reported he was benched Nov. 17, did not return, and finished the year on injured reserve after a knee issue flared up. He ended the season ranked 31st out of 36 passers in Total QBR among quarterbacks with at least 200 attempts, according to ESPN’s report. The Jets have since moved forward with Geno Smith, Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe in the room.So yes, Kansas City got useful insurance. The Jets got off a contract they clearly no longer wanted. But the cleanest truth here is this: the Chiefs bought themselves breathing room while the Jets paid to erase a miss.
