Madikeri: In response to the severe crop damage caused by incessant rain in Kodagu district, BJP functionaries, including former MLAs Appachu Ranjan and KG Bopaiah, called for immediate action from the state govt.During their visit to the rain-affected areas in Somwarpet, the functionaries inspected the extensive damage to coffee estates, with reports indicating over 70% crop loss in some areas. They accused the state govt of a lack of concern for coffee growers, emphasising the need for immediate compensation and support. The BJP functionaries highlighted the significant losses faced by farmers, not only in coffee, but also in cardamom and pepper crops. They pointed out that the heavy rain led to the dropping of coffee beans and the washing away of fertilisers, further exacerbating the financial strain on growers.Appachu Ranjan stressed the importance of utilising NDRF and SDRF funds for farmer compensation and called for separate funds for road repairs. They demanded the release of Rs 80,000 in compensation for each affected grower and urged the govt to conduct a joint crop loss survey involving the Coffee Board, revenue, and horticulture departments. They criticised the current administration for its inaction and lack of development initiatives, comparing it with the BJP’s previous efforts to provide continuous relief to farmers. The leaders’ demands for compensation and a comprehensive crop loss survey aims to ensure that affected farmers receive the necessary support to recover from the devastating impact of the monsoon rain.
