New credit risk norms for banks

Mumbai: RBI has unveiled draft norms to improve banks’ management of credit risk and classification of bad loans. The changes are expected to ease capital requirements for segments like MSMEs, real estate and credit cards. The new proposal also shifts banks from recognising default losses after they occur to an ‘expected credit loss’ framework, requiring provisions to be set aside earlier.
