Bengaluru: The outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting at an upscale apartment complex in south Bengaluru culminated in the death of an eight-year-old boy Thursday. Water contamination is suspected to be the reason. The incident occurred at Prestige Falcon City apartment, off Kanakapura Road. Preliminary investigation revealed that the residents had been complaining of ill-health for the past three weeks, and fingers were pointed towards the water being supplied to them.Bengaluru South City corporation officials, who are monitoring the situation in the apartment, said the boy had been suffering from nephrotic syndrome for the last two years and was being treated with antibiotics and steroids. The prolonged ill health, worsened by the alleged deterioration in water quality, resulted in his death. Officials have set up a health desk at the apartment, held discussions with members of the apartment association, and deployed doctors to handle medical emergencies. Water samples have been collected and sent for testing.Meanwhile, several residents complained about the apathy they faced following the outbreak. “I’ve been sick for the past 45 days… I got sick 6-7 times and have been spending most of the time in hospitals; the same goes for my parents. We’ve been complaining about it for the past two months and no serious action has been taken,” a resident stated while pointing out that at least around 800 residents have fallen sick recently.
