Woman loses Rs 2.4 lakh in parcel scam

Mangaluru: A woman from Bantwal allegedly fell victim to an online fraud scheme and lost Rs 2.4 lakh after being lured with the promise of a high-value gift parcel to be sent via courier. In a complaint, the woman stated that on Dec 3 last year, she received a phone call stating that a gift parcel had arrived for her through DHL Express Courier Services, Delhi. The caller informed her that the parcel contained gold, an iPhone, Rs 49 lakh in cash, and other valuable items. To receive the parcel, she was told that she would have to pay a clearance fee in advance. When the complainant responded that she did not have the money at that time, she was advised to take a loan from Bajaj Finance to pay the charges and receive the parcel. The complainant was told she would receive a loan of up to Rs 10 lakh and that advance payment was required to process the loan. Believing this, she transferred a total of Rs 80,000 in stages via PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm to the number provided by the caller. Further, on June 6, she received a message on WhatsApp from an anonymous number again claiming that a parcel from DHL Express Courier Services, Delhi, containing gold, an iPhone, Rs 49 lakh, and other valuable gifts had arrived and would be delivered to her legally, after she made an advance payment of Rs 35,000. Believing this again, she allegedly transferred Rs 35,000 on the same day, and later Rs 65,000 on June 12 and Rs 50,000 on June 16 to the bank account details provided by the accused. She alleged that she transferred Rs 2.4 lakh, which has neither been refunded nor has she received the promised parcel. A case has been registered at Bantwal Town police station under Sections 318(2), 318(4), and 319(2) of the BNS.
