With no guest faculty, govt colleges may face academic crunch

Mangaluru: The govt first-grade colleges in the Mangaluru division of the department of collegiate education are likely to operate without guest faculty, as their appointment for the new academic year was reportedly delayed. Their tenure for the last academic year ended on Saturday.Though the govt, learning from the mistakes of last year, decided to issue an early recruitment notification of guest faculty to govt first-grade colleges across the state, it was delayed due to the annual and regular transfer of permanent faculty meeting with legal and other issues. The colleges in the coastal region, which started the fresh academic year last week, have urged the state govt to appoint guest faculty at the earliest, to avoid any inconvenience to students.Dr P Dayananda Pai-P Satisha Pai Government First Grade College, Car Street, Mangaluru, which started classes last week, has over 60 guest faculty teaching various courses. “With the duration of last academic year’s guest faculty ending on Saturday, there is uncertainty about their immediate appointment. If there are no guest faculty, classes will be affected from Monday,” said college principal Jayakara Bhandary. Till Friday, the overall attendance was around 80%, and students are expected to return to campus next week. “Many have not returned to campus as they have joined work, and others are yet to be allotted govt-run hostels,” he added.Sources from the department of collegiate education added that regular annual transfers were delayed, resulting in the delay of guest faculty recruitment. Currently, issues related to the transfer have been resolved, and permanent faculty have been moved to their new colleges. “This academic year, things are better as the govt issued notification at the earliest compared to last academic year, where guest faculty came to college only two months after the start of the classes,” an official said.N Manjushree, commissioner, DCE, said that regular transfers were completed this week. “We will issue the calendar soon for guest faculty counselling,” she said.
