Urologists perform robotic surgery to treat cancer patient | Mangaluru News

Mangaluru: A team of urologists at Yenepoya Medical College Hospital in Deralakatte, utilising the latest in robotic surgical technology, successfully performed a radical cystectomy with intracorporeal neobladder reconstruction for a patient diagnosed with muscle-invasive carcinoma of the bladder.Muscle-invasive bladder cancer, the type treated in this case, is particularly aggressive, as it penetrates the muscle wall of the bladder. Traditional treatment often involves a radical cystectomy, the surgical removal of the bladder, followed by the creation of an alternative way for the body to store and eliminate urine in the form of an ileal conduit with a urine collection bag attached to the abdomen. The team, including Dr Mujeeb, Dr Altaf Khan, Dr Nischith, Dr Sharath and Dr Rehan, opted for a groundbreaking approach by employing robotic assistance for the procedure. Robotic surgery, which involves the use of tiny instruments and a high-definition 3D camera controlled by the surgeon from a console, allows for unparalleled precision and control. This minimally invasive technique results in smaller incisions, reduced pain, and a faster recovery time for patients. In this case, the surgeons performed a radical cystectomy, removing the cancerous bladder, and then created a neobladder using a segment of the patient’s intestine. This neobladder was constructed intracorporeally, meaning entirely inside the body, a technique that further minimises the invasiveness of the surgery and enhances recovery.Post-operatively, the male patient was doing exceptionally well, a release from the hospital stated.
