Upa Lokayukta inspects Kesare sewage plant after public concerns | Mysuru News

Mysuru: Upa Lokayukta Justice KN Phaneendra on Friday conducted an inspection of the Kesare Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) and the Solid Waste Management Unit following public concerns regarding hygiene, health, and land encroachments near the waste facility.Justice Phaneendra began his visit at the Kesare STP, where he appreciated the functioning and upkeep of the facility. He advised officials to enhance the environment around the plant by removing overgrown weeds and planting flowering and high-quality ornamental plants. Stressing the importance of hygiene, he urged officials to ensure cleanliness in all villages and promote public awareness on waste segregation.He emphasised the need to educate the public on separating dry and wet waste and the importance of community participation in maintaining a clean environment.The Upa Lokayukta later inspected the Solid Waste Management Unit, also located in Kesare. Responding to complaints from local residents, he directed the deputy commissioner Lakshmikanth Reddy to initiate a scientific study by experts to assess any potential health issues affecting people living within a 5-km radius of the facility. This includes an evaluation of possible impacts on residents and businesses such as nearby hotels.Justice Phaneendra emphasised the enforcement of a 500-metre buffer zone around the Solid Waste Management Unit. He instructed officials to identify and take action against any unauthorised plots or constructions within this restricted area. Additionally, he called for a health impact assessment to examine whether the odour and emissions from the unit are adversely affecting children or other residents in the vicinity. He urged authorities to implement preventive and corrective measures to safeguard public health and minimise inconvenience to the local population.Zilla panchayat CEO S Ukesh Kumar, MCC commissioner Sheikh Tanveer Asif, and executive engineer of Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board Asif were present.
