Stones pelted, motorcycle set ablaze: Clashes erupt in Pune village over social media post; police use teargas to disperse mob

NEW DELHI: Tensions flared in Yavat village of Pune’s Daund tehsil on Friday afternoon after a social media post allegedly triggered a violent clash between two groups, prompting police to fire teargas shells to disperse an angry mob.Police said a young man from one community had shared an objectionable post online, news agency PTI reported.Violence broke out soon after, with protesters reportedly vandalising property, hurling stones and setting a motorcycle on fire. “A mob vandalised structures belonging to the opposite community and turned violent. Teargas had to be used to control the situation and restore order,” a police official told reporters, adding that the youth who uploaded the post has been detained. Additional security forces were deployed in the area as tensions remained high. Sandip Singh Gill, superintendent of police (Pune Rural), visited the village and urged residents to remain calm. “We are closely monitoring the situation. I appeal to everyone to refrain from spreading rumours,” Gill said.
