It is claimed that the private steel factory unlawfully encroached upon the lake and erected a fence around it. Consequently, various organisations protested two days ago, demanding that Basapur lake be accessible to the public and livestock be permitted to drink from it. During the demonstration, protesters not only brought their cattle to the DC’s office but also entered the factory grounds with them to voice their discontent. As a result, the factory lodged a complaint against nine protesters at the Koppal Rural police station on Thursday. Continuing the protest, on Friday morning, Devappa Halahalli, a shepherd from Basapur village, went to the lake to give water to his sheep and was assaulted by the security guards present. Subsequently, factory staff transported the injured shepherd in their vehicle to the district hospital. As a result, several protesters who approached the factory on Friday had a confrontation with the security staff present there. Eventually, the police intervened and defused the situation. Videos of the assault on the shepherd are now circulating on social media, inciting public outrage.
