School tank found contaminated with herbicide; 4 students fall ill | Mysuru News

Shivamogga: Four students fell ill after using water from a tank which was found to be contaminated with herbicide at the govt primary school of Hoovinakone village in Hosanagar taluk.One of the two tanks of the school had a high concentration of herbicide and the students noticed unusual odours while washing hands. They alerted their teachers, leading to an investigation.The students, who fell ill, required treatment at hospital and recoverd later.Hosanagar tahsildar Rashmi Halesh, who visited the spot, said 17 out of the 18 pupils attended classes on the day.The school maintains two water storage facilities: one for washrooms and the other for cooking. The storage was in the tank whose water was used for cooking. The water turned white due to the contamination. The staff used the alternative tank’s water for preparing pupils’ milk.The incident has prompted serious safety concerns. Villagers demanded swift identification and prosecution of the perpetrators. Hosanagar police have launched an investigation but face challenges due to the absence of CCTV cameras in the vicinity.
