Old building collapses in Bengaluru, no major injuries reported

Bengaluru: A residential building, estimated to have been constructed 40-50 years ago, near Corporation Circle on SR Nagar Road collapsed around 1.30pm Thursday. The collapsed two storey building is situated right next to the BBMP office. The owner of the building, Ashwin Kumar, 42, sustained a leg injury in the incident. His wife, when contacted later, said he had fractured his right leg and would need a surgery. The building, which was undergoing renovation after the owner vacated the previous tenants 3-4 days ago, caved in minutes after three workers stepped out for lunch.Preliminary inspection suggests that the age and structural weakness of the building may have caused the collapse, said a BBMP official who was on the spot. BBMP officials inspected the site and said the owner had to clear the debris and to bear the cost.As a precautionary measure, BBMP has issued notices to three neighbouring buildings, asking residents to vacate temporarily. Officials will carry out a stability assessment of the surrounding structures before allowing residents to return. Safety and structural checks will follow once the debris is cleared.
