MLA urges CM to set up state photography academy

Udupi: Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna has written to chief minister Siddaramaiah, urging for the establishment of a photography academy in the state to fulfil the long-standing demand of photographers. This initiative aims to provide recognition to the profession and support the development of the photography field, the MLA said.Currently, over four lakh photographers are actively working in Karnataka. Photography is not just an art or profession today; it plays a crucial role in cultural preservation, social change, education, technical skill enhancement, and livelihood. Photographers are engaged in journalism, festivals, weddings, nature, and cultural photography. Despite the large number of talented individuals in the field, there is still no govt-recognised photography academy in the state. Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have already established such academies with govt support, making it essential for Karnataka to follow suit, the MLA said.“Establishing a photography academy in Karnataka would provide recognition to photographers, preserve cultural and historical records, offer technical skill development programmes, and support senior photographers with pensions, insurance, awards, and tourism activities. It would also empower young photographers through various supportive programs,” said Suvarna. In a letter, the MLA emphasised the urgent need for a state-level photography academy in Karnataka to honour the contributions of photographers to society, and requests action on behalf of all photographers in the state.
