Man sentenced to life for murdering sister

Ballari: The judge of the 2nd sessions court here sentenced a man to rigorous life imprisonment on Aug 1 and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 for murdering his own sister over a property dispute.The ruling indicated that if the accused fails to pay the fine, he will face an additional year of simple imprisonment. Additionally, he is required to pay Rs 50,000 as compensation to Akhil Pujar, son of deceased Sunanda Pujar. If he lacks the funds, the amount is to be sourced from the culprit’s property.Sunanda Pujar resided in the same household as her brother Venugopal in Satyanarayanapet, Ballari city. She was estranged from her husband and sought her rightful share of the family property, which was a significant factor leading to her murder.Venugopal believed that his sister’s estrangement from her husband was hindering his chances of finding a spouse. He was also unwilling to share the ancestral property with her.Consequently, on Nov 3, 2017, Venugopal attacked Sunanda with a machete. She was taken to VIMS Hospital with critical head injuries and succumbed to her wounds without responding to medical treatment.The court took into account the testimonies of 16 witnesses. Lakshmi Devi Patil represented the govt during the proceedings.
