Karnataka: MBBS college cutoffs increase by 9k ranks in first round of counselling | Bengaluru News

Bengaluru: The cutoffs for MBBS in state colleges increased by 9,000 ranks in the first round of counselling. Experts hope the difference will decrease in the next rounds, once All India quota results are announced. In 2024, in general merit, the cutoff rank was 69,117 in the first round of counselling. In 2025, the last rank to secure a seat in general merit was 60,728. Similarly, in the SC category, the cut-off rank was 2,23,564 in 2024, while it was 2,11,587 in 2025. The high cut-offs in the first round are attributed to various reasons. The results of the first round of counselling for the All India quota (AIQ) by the medical counselling committee (MCC) are likely to be released on Aug 6. Once it is announced, many top-ranked students are likely to choose seats through AIQ, leaving the seats through KEA counselling available for others. Raghavendra Hegde, a counsellor for MBBS courses, said: “This year, the competition is high. While the exam was very tough, many students expected the competition to be not so high. The assumption was that the cut-offs would decrease and be around 80,000. But the real scenario turned out to be completely opposite. Compared to other states, toppers from Karnataka have increased from last year. With MCC counselling yet to happen, these students have opted for state colleges. However, they will move to the AIQ seat once MCC announces the list.”In addition, there are no new medical colleges or seats approved by the national medical commission this time. Worse, Karnataka also lost a few seats because Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Belagavi, did not get approval from NMC. The results of the first round of counselling were released Saturday.
