Bengaluru: A man who allegedly attempted to snatch the mobile phone of a nursing student could not go beyond the gates of Bowring Hospital recently thanks to her alertness. Her resolve to chase him and the alarm she raised resulted in his arrest.Mohan, 25, a resident of Ballapura village in Tumakuru district, has now been remanded in judicial custody. The incident occurred when Harshitha, a third-year nursing student at Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institute, was in Bowring Hospital on a clinical posting.She was trying to make a phone call to her friend around noon on July 22 on the 7th floor of the hospital as Mohan walked from one end of the corridor to the other, observing her. After confirming no one was close to her, he allegedly wore a face mask, approached her, and attempted to snatch her mobile phone. An alert Harshitha held the phone tightly and shouted kalla, kalla (thief, thief), and it prompted him to run away.Harshitha ran after him, while continuing to raise the alarm. Soon, the attendants on the floor, security guards, and other hospital staff joined her. Mohan took to his heels down the stairs and managed to reach the ground floor as some 15-20 people tried to catch hold of him. He was caught by the security near the entrance gates when he was about to exit the premises.Mohan, who had worked as an outsourced D group employee in the hospital, had been removed from work due to his mischievous activities. Since he knew the staff and security guards, he was allowed into the hospital. Taking advantage of this, Mohan had allegedly stolen a bag from a patient and a mobile phone from a security guard. He had not been caught previously, a senior police officer said.Harshitha said she had never seen Mohan while he was working. “I had only one thing in mind: he should never steal or rob anything from others in the future, so I chased him.” She said she was not sure if he was taking revenge by targeting the hospital patients, staff, and students for sacking him.A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) section 309 (5) (robbery) and 62 (attempt to commit offences punishable by imprisonment for life or other imprisonment).
