Baagina offered to Linganamakki dam | Mysuru News

Shivamogga: Karnataka Power Corporation officials performed the traditional baagina offering to the River Sharavathi at Linganamakki dam in Sagar taluk on Friday. The Sharavathi River’s significant water inflow led to the Linganamakki reservoir reaching 1,811.40 feet, with approximately 14,000 cusecs flowing in. The reservoir, a crucial water body in the state, is currently at 89% capacity, with its maximum level being 1,819 feet.Following tradition, officials conducted a ceremony as the reservoir surpassed expected levels. The ritual included raising one sluice gate by six inches for half-an-hour, while plant and dam engineers presented baagina. This procedure also serves to verify the sluice gate’s operational status.Chief engineer (civil) M Madesh told TOI, “We lifted gate number 6 by six inches to release 500 cusecs of water. It is part of checking the gates too. It was 86% filled last year. We are expecting good rain in Aug too. We have issued two alerts already, and in a week, we will issue the final warning, then we will release the water through the gates continuously. We have no plan for inviting any guests for the official baagina by representatives.”KPC Workers’ Union president K Veerendra stated, “CM Siddaramaiah, who broke blind beliefs, can come and offer baagina to the dam. For many years, politicians stayed away from the event because they have the illusion of losing power.”Chief engineer (operation and maintenance) Ramesh and executive engineer Shivakumar attended the ceremony.
