Road work in Unkal progressing at a snail’s pace | Hubballi News

Hubballi: The CC (cement concrete) road construction in Unkal, intended to resolve long-standing commuting issues, is progressing at a snail’s pace. Although sanctioned for Rs 20 crore under the national highways, delays in land acquisition and pending compensation to residents have hampered progress. Locals are urging authorities to expedite the work.The road work, which began over two and a half years ago, has made only half the progress. Of the 160 properties involved, land for around 60 properties was acquired, leaving locals to endure severe difficulties. Approximately 300m of road still needs to be constructed. The remaining section of the road has deteriorated, with potholes causing issues for motorists. An electric pole has not been shifted. The work period was already extended many times. As per the last extension, the work should be completed by the end of March 2025.Abdul Razak, a resident of Unkal, said that the CC road construction work was ongoing for the last three years. Due to the rain, the road deteriorated. The road work was stopped. The HDMC is delaying providing compensation for the land. He urged the authorities to complete the road work soon.Pavan Hanjagi, a motorist, said there are potholes causing problems for pedestrians and motorists. The incomplete road work is causing inconvenience. The work started two years ago. The authorities failed to develop the CC road work promptly, he said.HDMC’s ward No. 37 corporator, Umeshgouda Koujageri, said that the road work spans 3.5km from Unkal Cross to Sai Nagar Circle and Sai Nagar Main Road, the church, and Hebballi gate. Around 300m of road from Mailarlinga Temple to Chalawadi Oni is pending. The HDMC has to release the amount for land acquisition. He mentioned that 85% of the work was completed.HDMC engineer Sharanbasappa Kembhavi stated that land acquisition and compensation to the house owners will be provided by HDMC. Around Rs 12 crore was estimated for the compensation. Already, Rs 5 crore has been compensated to the 60 house owners. The remaining 100 houses will be compensated.Tulasi G, assistant engineer of national highway, said that the road is being developed under CRF. The HDMC should clear the land for the CC road work. Soon after clearing the land, the work will start, she added.
