Kukkarahalli lake suffers from poor maintenance, inadequate security | Mysuru News

Mysuru: The walkway around Kukkarahalli lake is a popular spot among those going for a morning or evening walk. However, poor infrastructure and lack of basic amenities pose quite a challenge to those looking to stay fit or unwind around this waterbody. Walkers and fitness enthusiasts who frequent the 4.5-km trail around the lake are inconvenienced by ill-equipped washrooms and inadequate security surveillance.Though four washrooms were built around the lake, none of those are usable. In fact, residents complain that the toilets are so deplorable that stepping into one is not an option. “No one dares use them,” said one regular walker.Adding to the concerns, the lake, which sees more than 6,000 visitors daily, has only three CCTV cameras — all at the entrance. The rest of the trail remains unmonitored, raising serious safety concerns, especially during the evening hours. When TOI visited the lake, it found out that post-sundown, the waterbody and its adjoining areas were poorly lit and security was inadequate, with just four guards deployed to cover the entire 4.5-km area. Moreover, due to soil erosion, the stones along the banks of the lake lie exposed, making it difficult and unsafe for walkers to negotiate the pathway.DV Dayanand Sagar, the convenor of Mysore Grahakara Parishat, said: “Hundreds of people frequent this spot. Yet, there are no proper washrooms. It is particularly difficult for the elderly who visit this area.” Umesh, the assistant executive engineer at University of Mysore, which maintains the lake, told TOI: “We are aware of the issues. The washrooms will be repaired soon. Fresh lighting is being installed around the lake, and we also plan to install high-resolution CCTV cameras to enhance security,” he assured.
