Anti-drugs initiative launched

Udupi: With the motto for a drug-free India, the Anti-Drug Committee in Schools and Colleges initiative was officially launched at Shri Narayana Guru Sabha Bhavana, Bannanje, in collaboration with the Udupi district police on Thursday.SP Hariram Shankar presided over the event and discussed the harmful effects of drug abuse, noting with concern that Udupi district ranks third in Karnataka for the number of drug-related cases. He emphasised that regular interaction between college heads and the police department can act as a deterrent, preventing students from falling prey to drug addiction. He said that each college must now form an Anti-Drug Committee, which should consist of the principal, two staff members, and three students. The jurisdictional police officer – either an inspector or a sub-inspector (law & order) – will act as the nodal officer for the committee. The committee must meet once every month and organise at least one awareness activity–such as a campaign, walkathon, or similar outreach event. A representative from the local police station must be invited to every meeting, and the nodal officer should be called once every three months. In case any student or institution provides intelligence on drug networks, their identity will be kept strictly confidential. The chief guests included Varghese B, Principal, Government Pre-University College, Malpe; Sudhakar S. Naik, Additional SP, Udupi; Harsha Priyamvada, ASP Karkala Sub-Division; Prabhu D.T., DSP, Udupi; and Ramachandra Naik, Circle Inspector, Malpe.
