Karnataka's Kodagu sees govt schools shut as no students enrol despite english medium push

MADIKERI: Despite introducing English medium sections in govt schools to boost attendance, student numbers continue to decline in Kodagu district.This academic year, six govt schools temporarily shut down due to zero enrolment. The future reopening of these institutions remains uncertain, as parents may hesitate to re-enrol their children, the authorities stated.Yeravanadu Government Higher Primary School near Cherambane in Madikeri taluk, Government Lower Primary School in Somwarpet taluk, Dundalli Government Higher Primary School near Shanivarasanthe, Mudravalli B. Lower Primary School, Mallikarjuna Government Higher Primary School near Shanthalli, and Siddalingapura Government Higher Primary School under Torenur Gram Panchayat in Kushalnagar taluk have been closed.In the past five years, 27 govt schools ceased operations in Kodagu district. Parents’ preference for private English-medium schools primarily led to closures. The closures comprise 18 upper primary and 9 lower primary schools across different taluks: 7 in Madikeri, 17 in Somwarpet, and 3 in Virajpet taluks.Kodagu District DDPI C. Rangadhamappa said, “Schools have been temporarily closed due to zero enrolment. If students enrol, the schools will be reopened. A govt school near Bhagamandala, previously closed, reopened after five students enrolled.”Somwarpet taluk BEO Bhagyamma said, “Teachers from schools with zero enrolment in Modur Government Lower Primary School, SHP School Dundalli, and SKP School Mallikarjuna have been reassigned. Schools will reopen immediately if five students enrol.”
