BENGALURU: A month after the gruesome killing of five tigers—the national animal—at the MM Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, 20 peacocks, the national bird, were found dead under mysterious circumstances in a village in Tumakuru, Karnataka.According to forest officials, the incident was reported from Hanumanthapura village in Midigeshi hobli of Madhugiri taluk in Tumakuru.G Shashidhar, deputy conservator of forest, told TOI that the incident happened on the midnight of August 1 and came to light on the morning of August 2 when farmers sighted the carcasses scattered across farmland.“There were three males and 17 females. Visceral samples of the birds have been sent to a forensic lab for further analysis. We have registered a case under the Wildlife Protection Act,” he said.While the first carcass was found next to a stream, the others were found within a radius of 500-600 meters from the stream. Villagers suspect that the peacocks may have died after consuming the sowed seeds in the field.
