Govt forms panel for Tulu status

Mangaluru: The state govt has formed a five-member committee to study the criteria followed by the Andhra Pradesh govt in declaring a second official language. This is part of an initiative to declare Tulu as the second official language in Karnataka.The committee formed by the state govt will be headed by Gayatri KM, director of the department of Kannada and culture. The committee has been given the task of conducting a detailed study in Andhra Pradesh. The committee includes Vanitha, deputy secretary of the law department; Moorthy KN, deputy secretary of the department of personnel and administrative reforms; Tharanath Gatti Kapikad, chairman of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and Sudhakar Shetty, a member of the Yakshagana Academy, as its members.The committee will study the standards and procedural framework adopted by Andhra Pradesh when it recognised another regional language as an additional official language. Earlier, the Karnataka govt gathered information regarding Andhra Pradesh’s linguistic policies. The govt has directed the committee to complete the study and submit its report with comprehensive details on how Andhra Pradesh implemented the status of a second official language, within three months.
